I am so glad that I took Fundamentals of Studio Art 1 this year. Recently, I went through my portfolio and I realized how much I have grown as an artist throughout this year. I made creative, original art all throughout the year. One of the main reasons that I love this class was because when you finish a project, you are free to start your own creative project that can be put in your portfolio still. At the end of the year, we were given an independent project where you could make anything you wanted with the materials in the room. I wanted to do something that I’ve never done before, so I gathered a bunch of materials from the art room and made a ukulele. I developed art making skills through making this project because I have never used the corks in the room or the hot glue gun, which is an important thing to know how to do. In this project I also took a big risk because I didn’t really have any instructions on how to make this, I just went with what I thought looked right.
A project that I solved problems while doing was the figure drawing. I liked this aspect of the class because when you think you're done with something, you always have your friends to help check your work and see if there is anything that you could improve. In the figure drawing, I solved problems because although the options for what to make were endless, I had trouble deciding whether I should've add other things to my piece or not. I asked my friends for advice and I made changes and added things and I ended up liking the turn out a lot.
The hunger inspiration project was a project where I felt that everyone communicated through their art. Everyone’s piece had a message and I felt that everyone was affected by this project because of how hard it hits home.
Although I don’t have a picture of the tape art that Pauliny, Kristen and I made, we definitely collaborated the most on this project. We had to work together and manage our time while making this project. We spent a lot of time bouncing ideas off each other and taking aspects of some ideas out and combining others until we all agreed on one topic.
After taking Art 1, I have begun to notice art everywhere I go. I can find art in my house, in nature, at night and even in school. I feel that this class has made me have a global awareness of art because of the way Mrs Haggerty teaches. I feel like the excitement and energy that she brings to class every day makes me excited to make art and see art wherever I go.
Reflecting wasn't my favorite part of the year, even though we didn't do it that often anyways. It is definitely really helpful because it is always better to get opinions on your work before handing it in because there is always something that you can change.
My most successful project of this year was probably my intro to watercolors. I loved this project because I like to have some instruction but I also like to be able to choose what I’m doing. I loved the colors that I chose and I liked the diamond that I made in the middle too because it came out really well. At first, I was going to hand it in without the black outline around the diamond, but my friends told me that I should add the outline which was really helpful and made a big difference.
A project that I made that I used techniques from previous projects was my self portrait. I didn't like the way this project came out, but I think it was decent. I used techniques from the shaded hand project that we made at the beginning of the year. The self portrait was a lot more intense and difficult than the shaded hand project regarding shading and value, but without the hand project I think I would have had a more difficult time with the self portrait than I did. I learned that you shade from the direction in which light is coming from, and I used that knowledge while shading my portrait.
The people pot that I made for my mom for Mother’s Day was a project that I think reflects me as an artist. The art that I like to make it creative and colorful and fun, which basically describes the people pot. Although the idea wasn't original, I feel like the way I made the clay people (resembling the people in Keith Haring’s art) was creative and the colors that I chose.
Feedback that I could give students next year is to not waste time in class. If you have homework for other classes, get it done at home. Focus on your work in the art room and make sure your art is a priority in the art room.
Art can help change the world by bringing people together. Art can be taken in so many different ways, which is why I love it so much. It can be drawings, paintings, music, and even nature. Each day, I interact with art because of the way Mrs Haggerty has taught my class to find art everywhere we go. Before taking an art class, I didn't really appreciate art in the real world as much as I do now.
