Two hands interacting was one of my favorite projects so far. I am kind of disappointed with my result though. I had higher expectations for the end product. To make this, I found a picture online of what I wanted to draw and I very lightly drew on the big paper a little outline of the picture that is proportional to the paper. Then, once I drew the final hands I used the tortillion to shade and make value on both of the hands. Then, I used water colors to create the background. I basically used what I learned from the shaded hand project to finish this one. I was not happy with the background. I planned to have a really pretty light purple and blue mix that I think would have made the hands stand out more but I didn't put enough water in the purple and it was too dark.
These drawings were difficult for me because I didn't have any instruction on how to start or anything. I had the right idea setting up a picture plane on my face to try to get my eyes, nose and mouth in the right places but it was still challenging. Using the mirror did help me and even though Mrs Haggerty said it was easier to make my drawing come from head on, I thought it was easier to do it from the side. A symbol system affects the way I draw because it is what my brain thinks of when I think of an eye or something. I think of the shape of a football when I think about drawing an eye because that is what I have always drawn.
The grid on the view finder really helped me measure out the lines that I drew on the real paper. Without them I think that my hand would have come out a lot different on paper than it actually did. Using tools like the tortillion, drawing pencils and graphite helped me give my drawing a 3D effect because I got to give my art a different and darker look. Blind contouring is important to drawing because it teaches artists how to use their left and right brain. Also, it teaches artists to work without really lifting their pencil up. I thought that this project was fun because I had a completely different image of what I wanted my picture to come out as and what it actually came out as. My favorite part of this project was the carving part because I really liked the way the EZ carve cut when I used the tools. My least favorite part of the project was trying to be precise with the tools when I was carving because even though everything looked good, there were still pieces that showed up on the paper that I had missed on the EZ carve. My inspiration for the subject of my print was probably how it was really hot in school on the day that we designed our projects and the theme was nature. If I were to redo this project in a different way, I would definitely make the design less detailed. The first design that I wanted to do was a sailboat but I couldn’t do it because the design was too detailed for me to do with the carving tool. I would print my stamp on a different piece of paper than I chose too. Some of the concepts that I learned while doing this project was how to hold the carving tools correctly, which will be useful in the future when we have to carve linoleum blocks. Also I learned how to put ink onto the EZ carve block with the brayer. Something that surprised me while creating this artwork was how easy it was to carve on the EZ carve block. It was a lot of fun to carve on it.
The upside down drawing was different from anything that I have ever done in an art class. Doing an upside down drawing was easier than trying to do it the regular way because I could take it step by step and focus on little things instead of being focused on the big picture end result. When I was confronted with hands folded together in the middle I worked on them little by little until I was done. When I saw the real picture of Stravinsky at the end, I thought about how I would never be able to do that if I had not done it the upside down way. My line style was lightly drawing and then going over the lines again so they were darker. I like my style of drawing because I like dark lines.
I liked the Vase Face drawing because it was challenging but fun to do. We watched Betty Edwards talk about the project first and then we did it ourselves. We did it twice; once while we were talking and once without talking. The reason we did it twice was to learn about the difference between the left and right brain. I learned that it is much easier to draw when no one is talking. |
